Launching BiG the Sculpture Gallery The Hague

The Hague Sculpture Gallery goes BiG

Yesterday, Saturday 2 October, near the Grote Markt in The Hague, a new initiative was presented that makes art in the public space accessible to people with visual impairments. Stichting Oren en Ogen Tekort launched the first audio series for visually impaired people about art in the public space. The main character in this series is P. Struycken' s sculpture gallery. Every 25 metres there is a sculpture on a pedestal on the Spui, the Grote Markt and the Kalvermarkt. More than forty sculptures in total. With Beeld in Geluid (in short BiG) everyone can now experience this art 24/7.

Since May 2019, the Oren en Ogen Tekort Foundation has been initiating efforts to make art and culture accessible to the visually impaired. To this end, the foundation has already developed guided tours of museums and guided city walks along art in public spaces. Since Saturday, a new option has been added: BiG, Image in Sound. Via an audio fragment, a description of the image can be listened to. Beautiful or ugly is not the issue, nor is the meaning. However, you can hear an objective description of what the work of art looks like. In this way, every visually impaired person can form his or her own image of a work of art.

The audio fragments can be found on the website BuitenKunst Den Haag (bdkh.nl) under the texts of all sculptures in De Beeldengalerij. Click there on extra link to listen to the image description. And take a look at: https://www.orenenogentekort.nl/big-ook-bij-jou-in-de-buurt.
