Wow, what an orange glow this sculpture has inside! On the outside, it looks like 'just' a white cardboard tube. Carelessly folded and slid over the base. A bit wrinkled here and there, even, as can be seen from the lines on the white. Inside, there is an intimate place. You could sing a song there, look intensely at your lover or listen very quietly to the sounds of the city. To do this, of course, you have to stick your head through one of the holes.

The maker of this work, Yvonne Dröge Wendel, is not a sculptor in the classical sense. Her sculptures are more like research objects than sculptures you find in a museum. Typically, she married a wooden cabinet made by Wendel in 1992. She took it on her honeymoon to Portugal and it has carried 'his' name ever since. It sounds crazy, but it goes to the heart of her artistry. For Dröge Wendel, things, people, nature, skills and ideas are connected in one large social fabric. And very important: they give shape to each other.

Usually Dröge Wendel invites you to do something with simple objects like a stick, a ball, a wad of paper or a form of clay. World famous is her The Black Ball, a giant ball of black felt that she has had passers-by move through the streets in various cities around the world since 2000. It is downright amazing to see how people react differently to this soft dark object that is much larger than herself.

With its holes and bright orange interior, Dröge Wendel's sculpture in the middle of the busy shopping street entices you not only to gather, but also to experience a new form of togetherness with an object and another human being. To Be To Gather.
