Artwork Description
Text
Proud and cocky, he looks ahead. As if the ram in the Zuiderpark wants to say stubbornly: 'I am standing here and will not budge from anything or anyone'. This is how sculptor Peter Kortekaas depicted the animal in 1983. And everyone who visits a farm or petting zoo will say: 'yes, this is a typical ram'.
Kortekaas often puts humour in his sculptures. With him, a pose, a gesture or a look can be enough to make you laugh. That certainly applies to this ram. The animal is funny because he holds his head with his eyes slightly raised, which gives him a slightly down-to-earth look.
And then there is the strong plastic effect; the surface of the sculpture is so coarse that you would almost believe that the fur is real. You would like to run your fingers through the thick hair. But the ram is made of bronze, a cast of a sculpted version in clay. The rough design results in beautiful colour shades: the different surfaces break and reflect the light in a different way each time. In addition, the sculpture has been polished by many touches and the effects of the weather have given it a beautiful bronze colour.
Kortekaas has portrayed many more animals than the ram. In addition to animals, people also occupy an important place in his oeuvre. And what is true of his animal sculptures is also true of his human sculptures: the portrayal of one's inner self and mood is of primary importance to Kortekaas.
