Artwork Description

Text

Although he enjoys drawing and making collages, Lon Pennock manifests himself primarily as a sculptor. In his birthplace The Hague, various sculptures in public spaces underline his preference for thinking in terms of spaces, planes and volumes. The object he originally made for De Laan Academy on the Morsestraat is a good example of this. Its upward, linear form shows strong similarities with spatial objects by Pennock. For example with 'Intersection' in Kijkduin.

The object near the The Hague Domestic Academy, which was later relocated to the intersection of Ieplaan and Segbroeklaan, consists of two upright beams that are connected at the top and bottom. The sculpture is no less than 4 metres high and, thanks to its vertical orientation and clean, simple lines, it blends in perfectly with the buildings surrounding the courtyard. The beams, standing slightly apart from each other, function as a framework for an elongated open space in between. The (school) buildings, too, have a linear and austere design. The same applies to the greenery in the courtyard and the associated fencing.

Pennock's later work is less minimalist and conceptual. The artist, who studied at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague from 1962 to 1967 and then completed two years of additional training at the École des Beaux-Arts supérieure in Paris, was awarded the Buys van Hulten Prize for young sculptors in 1969 and exhibited in the Netherlands and abroad. In addition, he has made dozens of sculptures in public spaces. Constructivist tendencies are always defining, but the artist is increasingly loosening his grip on constructivist ideas.
