Artwork Description

Text

Playing the flute or guitar is not usually done in a busy street where the sound is drowned out by traffic noise, but in a pedestrian tunnel or low-traffic promenade, in a park or public garden. For this reason, images of people making music often feel more at home in locations where they can be 'heard' and seen by passers-by. They create a moment of rest or reflection in a hectic world.
The girl playing the flute feels completely at home in the middle of the public garden on Larensestraat, where she attracts the attention of passers-by. Rob Pleysier modelled the girl smoothly and skilfully. She radiates zest for life and dynamism and is completely absorbed in her flute playing. The artist displays a similar form of attention and devotion in all his sculptures.
Pleysier trained as a sculptor at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. He learned the tricks of the trade from well-known teachers such as Dirk Bus and Pieter de Hont. Later, he also worked as a teacher at a technical school in Rotterdam.
As a sculptor, Pleysier has always felt a strong connection to the figurative tradition. He worked in various materials (besides bronze also concrete) and showed a warm interest in and affection for mankind in his work. He studied human actions closely and always succeeded in catching people in the moment, as if he caught them or spied on them without their noticing.
