Wavy lines and curves predominate. Here and there an angular form can be detected, but his sculptures are never hard or severe. Nor is 'Granito nr. 1' by Hans Kleyweg. This granito sculpture from 1975 stands in the park of the Weigeliaplein. Granito, not to be confused with granite, is a mixture of cement and pieces of natural stone. After this mixture has been poured into the right shape, it is sanded and polished.
Kleyweg works almost without exception in granito. For 'Granito nr. 1', he mixed white cement with marble. The two main forms of the sculpture incline towards each other in a flowing movement. You could see two figures in it, wanting to gently embrace each other. As far as Kleyweg is concerned, anyone who looks at his sculptures is free to let his or her imagination run wild. That is why he gives his sculptures titles such as 'Variant on ring III' and 'Granito no. 1'. These abstract titles are moreover appropriate because his sources of inspiration, such as a dune landscape or a female torso, are very much in the background when he is working with his clay models.
Kleyweg experiments with mass and emptiness. In 'Granito nr. 1', we see him as it were searching for the hole in the mass. The two forms that approach each other do not quite describe a complete circle. This does happen in his later work. He then regularly uses the ring or circle as a form; sometimes consecutively, sometimes with a small opening on one side.
