Artwork Description

Text

On the lawn, between Margarethaland and Mariahoeveplein, on Hofzichtlaan stands the sculpture 'The Homecoming' by sculptor Joop Pellinkhof. In his work the artist reveals a strong preference for working with steel. In this particular case it is a combination of steel and bronze.
A baroque bronze form, depicting a strongly abstracted human figure, is linked to a large cylindrical sculpture element made of steel, which is reminiscent of a piece of a column. Both the column and the baroque human figure with solid curves stand on a pedestal. Together they form a double unit. This unity of opposites derives its contrasting effect not only from the use of different materials but also from the different ways in which these materials have been processed.

In this sculpture, Pellinkhof's fascination with combining geometric and organic form elements is striking. Ratio and emotion meet in images that have both a natural and a geometric component. In 'The Homecoming', the vulnerability of the abstracted woman's tower is linked to a rigid cylindrical form.
These contrasts also occur frequently in other work by the same sculptor. In The Hague, they can be seen in more places in the public space. The contrast between natural (or organic) processes and geometric principles is always decisive. The elements are linked in such a way that a new unity is created in which extremes complement each other.
