What happened to that Zebra clock?

New Outside Image section makes dynamics of outdoor art visible www.bkdh.nl

Where has the Central Station's Zebra Clock gone? Or the Monument Leger en Vloot in Scheveningen or the statue De Pitcher in Laak? Most Hague residents know the works of art, but what happened to them? Just before the holidays, the website BuitenkunstDenHaag.nl is launching a new section with information about works of art that are temporarily or permanently absent fromthe city. Sculptures that have disappeared from view due to construction work, relocation, demolition, restoration or theft. They can be found on the site from December 20 under the heading Out of Focus. The section was created to give residents of The Hague, lovers of the outdoors and curious onlookers more insight into the dynamics of the extraordinary collection of Buitenkunst of the hofstad.

Outdoor art means permanent change. It requires attention and good management. In public spaces, weather and wind affect the material of the works. Destruction and theft are more likely to occur. Public space itself is also constantly evolving. Buildings are demolished, squares and streets go up with some regularity. The sculptures standing in those areas then have to be repositioned. That can take some time.

Art center Stroom The Hague and the municipality are working together to preserve and manage the Buitenkunst collection as well as possible. On the website BuitenkunstDenHaag.nl current information can be found about all works of art in public space. The new section Buiten Beeld tells why a sculpture disappears from the streetscape, where it is located, if and when it will return. If it is a special case, additional background information is added. As soon as a work of art returns to the city, it can again be found on the site among the other sculptures.
