Unveiling of statue of Bertha von Suttner at the Peace Palace

On December 10, 2025, the municipality of The Hague unveiled a statue of Bertha von Suttner on Carnegieplein. The artwork, created by The Hague sculptor Ingrid Rollema, is an ode to the first and one of the most important peace activists in modern history. It is a gift from the Carnegie Foundation to the city of The Hague and its visitors, originally created to mark the 100th anniversary of the Peace Palace in 2013. After 12 years, the statue has now been given a permanent home right in front of the Peace Palace.

Bertha von Suttner (1843–1914) was an Austrian countess, writer, and tireless advocate for peace. In 1889, she published her famous anti-war novelDie Waffen nieder!(Lay Down Your Arms). This book is considered one of the most powerful protests against war in the 19th century. Because of her dedication and influence, she was the first woman to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1905.
