Commemoration at the renovated Sinti and Roma Monument

On Monday, May 4, 2026, starting at 7:15 p.m., a memorial service will be held in memory of the Sinti and Roma victims of World War II. The commemoration will take place at the Sinti and Roma Monument on Vondelstraat. A memorial designed by Jan Verburg has stood here since 2006, but names have been updated and added this year. This was done in response to inquiries from the city council. The municipality engaged in discussions on this matter with stakeholders, such as members of the Roma and Sinti community and the neighborhood committee of the Zeeheldenkwartier. Now, the names of all murdered Sinti and Roma who were registered in The Hague or were arrested here are inscribed on the monument. Furthermore, at the request of the bereaved families, more symbolic elements have been incorporated into the monument.

This year’s commemorative program is more extensive than usual. The lineup includes performances by two Gypsy bands, and Councilman Bruines will deliver a speech. Everyone is welcome to attend.
