Artwork Description

Text

The title says it all: 'Variant on ring'. Actually, the object by artist Hans Kleyweg on Erasmusweg is not an ordinary ring but an abstract form with a circular opening in the middle. Kleyweg made his variation on a ring of granito: a kind of artificial stone that consists of small pieces of marble and cement. The abstract form stands on a grass strip that separates the Erasmusweg from a bicycle path and the water that runs alongside it. A bench on the bank along the water offers the opportunity to relax. In a similar way, the sculpture also radiates serenity and a steady, cyclical movement.
Kleyweg is primarily interested in the form for the sake of the form. At the same time he is looking for an effective translation of abstract concepts such as rhythm, dynamics and structure. But in contrast to the pure constructivists, he is mainly interested in possible deviations from fixed form patterns. He varies on existing themes. A simple ring or circle shape can therefore take on different faces and even totally different qualities.
