Explanation

Since 1961, a perky bronze rooster stood in the Rosarium of Westbroek Park in the middle of the terrace of the time. Its one leg raised high as if it was scratching the ground in search of food. Entirely in the tradition of the time, sculptor Jos van Riemsdijk has rendered the animal accurately and with panache. For many years the scratching rooster has charmed walkers here. Great was the shock when in 2008 the bird appeared to have been stolen. Only the toes of one leg remained on the pedestal. No trace of the statue itself was ever found. In 2009, the municipality placed a new statue on the empty spot: Family and child caretaker by Dirk Bus from 1957.
