Artwork Description
Text
In a spacious square on the Van Meursstraat is a war monument that is hardly noticeable as long as no flowers or wreaths have been laid near it. The monument stands right in front of a fence that separates the square from a generous lawn and a children's playground. The memorial stone at 'De Wissel' has been stripped of any decorative embellishment.
On a rectangular concrete block lies a slab with the text: In memory of all victims of war 1940 - 1945 - 1995. On either side of this memorial stone are two low square concrete planters. A monument can hardly be more sober. Frills and excess are absent. No intrusive or dramatic groups of statues have been added, and no other artistic interventions have been made either. It is not known who made the monument.
Nevertheless, flowers and wreaths are regularly laid at this inconspicuous memorial stone. Without any great ceremony, incidentally. The flowers show that the monument meets a need.
