At the foot of the bridge to the Meijeraan in Wateringse Veld, there are particularly colourful ceramics. The colourful purple, red, yellow and green form a great contrast with the black of the bricks from which this culvert is constructed. The exuberant, figurative depictions of bunches of grapes, aubergines and blossom also contrast sharply with the austere and soberly designed bridge and the houses around it.

The ceramic forms are by Dora Dolz. At the beginning of the twenty-first century, she was one of four artists invited to make a ceramic work of art for the Wateringse Binnentuinen neighbourhood in Wateringse Veld. The starting point for these works of art had to be the horticultural past of the location. Dolz stuck to that: there are plenty of flowers and plants writhing over the wall. Although the ceramic applications in this environment seem rather exuberant, if you know Dolz' oeuvre, you realise that this is only the beginning. Where she could combine paintings, ceramics, glass and tapestries, she was at her strongest. The profusion of form and colour that characterises all her work can justifiably be called un-Dutch. Dolz was born and raised in Barcelona, Spain. From 1965, however, she lived and worked in Rotterdam. With her work, she tried to give the drabness of the Netherlands a bit of warmth and colour.

Dolz' work is a cross between autonomous visual art and art applications. She combined religious themes with exuberant still lifes with the greatest of ease. And all this in a variety of materials. Her monumental benches and chairs of colourful ceramics that she has made over the years for public spaces are particularly well known. Unfortunately, Dolz did not live to see the final realisation of her relief in Wateringse Veld. It was already in production and was completed posthumously.
