Artwork Description

Text

Huub Hierck's sculpture placed in the water opposite the former incinerator on Suezkade, corner of Newtonstraat, shows that the sculptor took the term 'cascade' quite literally. A cascade is a natural or artificial waterfall where the water falls in stages from rock to rock. Hierck imitated and enforced that process by designing a more or less stepped, columnar sculpture that tapers slightly towards the top.

The six-metre high column seems to be ascending into the sky while the water runs down in the opposite direction. The sculpture was installed in 1970 and is one of the many objects Hierck has made for public space. In The Hague, he studied at the Royal Academy of Art. Afterwards, he worked as a teacher at the Academy of Visual Arts in Rotterdam. The artist's versatility is evident not only from the various disciplines he practised, but also from the varied use of materials. He designed tapestries, worked in the sgraffito technique, made copper reliefs and ceramic wall plaques, used aluminium and other metals and painted.
