Artwork Description

Text

They are located between the many business premises on the Binckhorst industrial estate: the 'Binck Twins'. There, they mark the entrance to the multifunctional office and business premises of the same name. And the two sculptures are doing a good job of it. On their pedestal they are visible from afar. Tightly dressed in their identical suits, they approach you. The only thing remarkable is the height at which they are situated. This makes you wonder: what are they doing there?

That slightly alienating effect is typical of Berry Holslag's sculptures. Her colourful, monumental ceramic figures can regularly be found in public spaces. Their recognisable form makes them accessible to everyone. Yet Holslag is not only interested in making recognizable sculptures. This is evident from the subtle, alienating effect. Holslag also tries to get the viewer to think about how we function in our daily lives and about the way we perceive. Moreover, she questions traditions in sculpture. That is why, for a moment, she puts the viewer on the wrong foot. That raises questions and that is the beginning of looking again: exactly what Holslag intends.
